In the Ancient Indo-Aryan language In Sanskrit, the word Guru (गुरु) is often explained by breaking it into two parts: “Gu” (गु) and “Ru” (रु).

  • Gu means darkness or ignorance.
  • Ru means light or remover.

Together, Guru symbolizes one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and brings the light of knowledge. Thus, a Guru is traditionally viewed as a teacher or guide who leads their followers or students from ignorance to wisdom. Here are some examples of equivalent figures in major Western religions:

  1. Christianity:
    • Jesus Christ: In Christianity, Jesus is considered the central figure and spiritual teacher, often viewed as the divine Son of God who provides guidance on how to live a righteous life. His teachings in the Gospels serve as a foundation for Christian belief and practice.
    • Clergy: Priests, pastors, ministers, and other religious leaders fulfill roles similar to gurus, providing spiritual guidance, leading worship, and interpreting religious texts for their communities.
